What is Motivation?

For me motivation is getting out of bed in the morning and deciding to finally take a chance and do something that you’ve always wanted to do but have not yet done. For example, one day I decided I was going to try rock climbing. For years I was afraid of heights and would do anything to avoid high places. Well a few years ago I became friends with some people who were really into rock climbing. While I was looking at some pictures of them doing all kinds of crazy things I decided that is something I wanted to do also. One of the guys recommended a man he knew who teaches rock climbing as a place to start. So I met up with this rock climbing teacher and I spent several days with him learning how to rock climb. I loved it so much that I would take up all my free time going on trips just so I could rock climb. 

The point of this is what part motivation played in my learning how to rock climb. What would happened if the day I was going to learn to rock climb I decided to just stay home and watch television? I never would have learned how to rock climb. Right?

Try this to help you get motivated. First you need to find out what you want to do. Try to think of something that you’ve never done  before. 

Here are questions you can answer to help you think of something to do:
1.    If I could learn anything I wanted, I would study…
2.    If I could go back in time, I would…
3.    If I had all the money I wanted, I would…
4.    If I could meet one person, it would be…
5.    If I could ask my parents one thing, I would ask…
6.    If I could change the world, I would…

Now try to find out how you can fulfill the dream you chose when you answered one of these questions. Come up with some kind of plan to achieve the thing you chose. Talk to your parents and friends about your goal. Maybe your grandparents would be interested in hearing about your goals. 

Presto! You have just become motivated. Just by simply deciding to act on your dream of accomplishing something you have transformed yourself into a motivated person. Everyday do something that will help you accomplish your goal or think of a new goal and start working on that. The trick is to just keep moving and stay motivated, don’t just sit around and do nothing.
